Almost every Emirati listing is the same shape: pickup, dune bashing in a 4x4, a quad slot, a camel, then a camp with dinner and a show. What differs is how long you actually drive, whether the quad slot is thirty minutes or a full hour, and whether the machine is yours or shared. These three carry more riders than anything else in the Gulf.
Thirty minutes, or an hour of your own
The cheap listings hand you a shared machine for half an hour between the 4x4 run and dinner. The dearer ones give you your own quad for a full hour and a smaller convoy. If the riding is the point, pay the difference.
A buggy instead of a quad
A two-seat buggy has a cage, harnesses and a seat for somebody else, so it suits anyone who wants the dunes without driving alone. It costs roughly double a quad slot and it is the one upgrade riders rarely regret.
Camp, grill and the show after
The camp is where the afternoon actually ends: grilled meat, bread, sweet tea and a tanoura dancer. Dinner is included on most listings, and the drive back is an hour in the dark.

The Agafay stone desert
Agafay is not sand. It is a grey lunar crust of compacted stone forty minutes south of Marrakech, and because nothing grows on it there is no road, no fence and no reason to hold any particular line. Riders go out late so the heat drops, then eat at a camp with the Atlas turning pink behind them. The dust is the price: everything you wear comes back the colour of the ground.

The river crossing
The Balinese and Thai jungle tracks were cut for farm bikes, so they run through the water rather than over it. You drop into a shallow river, the front wheels push a wave up over the bars and you come out the far side soaked to the chest. Guides run them all year; in the wet season the ruts get deep enough that the whole thing turns into a wrestling match, which is either the point or the reason to book in the dry.

Riding into the hill

What actually stops people riding: an age limit, a height limit and the wrong shoes.
Nearly every machine on this site is automatic, so nobody needs a licence to sit behind a driver and most operators do not ask for one on private ground either. What does turn people away: solo riders are usually 16 or 18 and over, a passenger is often capped at a lower age and a minimum height, and open shoes are refused at the desk. Take sunglasses or goggles even where a helmet comes with the ride, wear sleeves you do not mind ruining, and expect a card deposit on anything you rent.
